Concrete Work
For 4" residential concrete in the Twin Cities, here are the essentials:
PSI rating
Patios and walkways: 3,500–4,000 PSI
Driveways: 4,000 PSI
Air entrainment (5–7%) is a must in Minnesota for exterior flatwork. It protects against freeze-thaw cracking and salt damage. Code minimum for exposed exterior concrete in severe-weather areas is 3,500 PSI, but 4,000 PSI air-entrained is the common local standard.
Key components of a proper pour
Subgrade: Remove topsoil and organic material, then compact the native soil.
Base: 4–6" of compacted Class 5 gravel. Poor base prep is the top cause of sinking and cracking.
Forms and slope: Pitch about 1/8–1/4" per foot away from the house for drainage.
Reinforcement: #3 or #4 rebar on 18–24" centers, set on chairs so it sits mid-slab. Wire mesh or fiber mesh are lighter alternatives.
Mix consistency: Avoid adding extra water on site. It weakens the concrete and causes surface scaling.
Control joints: Cut to 1" deep (1/4 of slab thickness), spaced every 8–10 feet, within 6–18 hours of the pour.
Finishing: Broom finish for traction outdoors. Don't overwork the surface.
Curing: Keep it moist or use a curing compound for at least 7 days. Full strength takes 28 days.
Weather: Avoid pouring below about 40°F without cold-weather measures like blankets or heated mix, which is relevant this time of year.
First winter: No deicing salts for the first year. Seal after about 30 days.
